Realizing the Return: How the OBBBA is Reshaping 2026 Refunds

We are now deep enough into the 2026 tax season to see real data emerging from the IRS, and the numbers are telling an interesting story. Across the country, taxpayers are noticing a bump in their refund checks. Early statistics show the average refund has climbed to $2,476—a 14.2% increase over the same period in 2025.

While an extra $300 in your pocket is certainly welcome, it is arguably lower than the $1,000 boost many policymakers predicted when the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) was passed. However, it is important to remember that it is still early March. As more complex returns are processed, these averages often shift. At True Tax Strategies LLC, we see this initial data as a positive signal that the new OBBBA provisions are beginning to take effect.

The Provisions Driving the Numbers

The OBBBA introduced specific deductions and credits designed to keep more money in the hands of working families and professionals. Here is what is actually moving the needle on refunds this year:

  • The Overtime Premium Pay Deduction: If you work hard enough to earn overtime, the government is finally giving you a break on it. Specifically, the "half" of your "time-and-a-half" pay is now deductible. This is capped at $12,500 for single filers and $25,000 for married couples filing jointly.

  • The Tips Tax Deduction: For those in service industries, up to $25,000 of qualified tips can now be deducted. Keep in mind that for both the overtime and tips deductions, benefits phase out for higher earners (starting at $150,000 MAGI for singles and $300,000 for joint filers).

  • Auto Loan Interest Deduction: Did you buy a new, U.S.-assembled vehicle for personal use after 2024? You may be able to deduct up to $10,000 of the interest paid. This applies whether you itemize or take the standard deduction, though it phases out starting at $100,000 MAGI ($200,000 for couples).

  • Enhanced Standard Deductions: The standard deduction has jumped significantly to $31,500 for married joint filers and $15,750 for singles. Seniors (65+) get an additional $6,000 "Senior Bonus," provided their income remains below the phase-out thresholds.

  • Expanded Child Tax Credit: Families are seeing relief with the credit increased to $2,200 per child. This benefit is available fully to married couples earning up to $400,000.

  • Increased SALT Limit: For residents in high-tax states, this is the big one. The State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction cap has been raised from $10,000 to $40,000 ($20,000 for married filing separately), reducing federal tax liability significantly for many homeowners.

Why Else Are Refunds Higher?

Beyond the OBBBA, a few mechanical issues are inflating refund amounts. First, many of these tax cuts were passed mid-year, but IRS withholding tables were not updated in real-time. This means many employees had too much tax withheld from their paychecks throughout 2025, resulting in a larger lump sum back now.

Additionally, inflation adjustments to tax brackets have helped mitigate "bracket creep," ensuring that cost-of-living raises did not accidentally push taxpayers into higher tax rates. We also saw the Adoption Tax Credit become partially refundable, putting up to $5,000 back in the pockets of adoptive parents regardless of their tax liability.

Navigating IRS Delays

While the refunds are promising, the administration of them is facing hurdles. The IRS workforce has shrunk by 25% since January 2025, right as they face the complexity of implementing the OBBBA. Consequently, the agency is processing returns about 3.1% slower than usual.
