Key Tax Deadlines for Individuals in February 2026

As we navigate February 2026, it's crucial to stay ahead of important tax deadlines. This guide outlines options for estimated tax payments, tip reporting guidelines, and deadlines for updating W-4 exemptions.

February 2 - Estimated Tax Payments

If you missed the January 15 deadline to pay your last estimated tax installment, you have a choice: you can file your 2025 income tax return (either Form 1040 or 1040-SR) by February 2. Completing your return and settling any due tax by January 31 can help you avoid any penalties for late payment of the final installment. If filing by February 2 proves difficult, ensure you do so by April 15.

February 10 - Reporting Tips for Employees

Employees who received $20 or more in tips in January need to report these to their employers. Utilize IRS Form 4070 or a personal statement that includes your signature, full name, address, Social Security number, employer’s name, and the period covered. This form should capture the total amount of tips received during the specified timeframe.

Your employer will deduct FICA taxes and applicable income tax withholding from your wages. If your regular pay isn't enough to cover these amounts, the discrepancy will be reported in box 8 of your W-2 for the year, which you will need to address in your tax return filing.

Weekend & Holiday Adjustments:

Whenever a tax deadline lands on a weekend or a legal holiday, the deadline is pushed to the next business day.

Extensions for Disaster Areas:

Should your area be declared a disaster zone, filing deadlines will be extended. For confirmation and additional information, check the following resources:
